My calling to become a women’s healer emerged when I began my study of herbal healing as an inquisitive teenager. In college, I continued this exploration with coursework in women’s studies and biology. After college, I trained as a midwife at a birth center on the Mexican-American border. There I witnessed first-hand the power of women’s bodies and learned to trust a women’s ability to birth naturally.
In medical school at the University of Louisville, I entrenched myself in the study of anatomy, physiology and pathology- the science of the causes and effects and diseases. Throughout my residency training in Family Medicine and Obstetrics, I learned to respect the natural process of disease but the curriculum did not focus on the study of health. I continued my career in a private medical practice and came to realize that helping my patients achieve genuine health requires a balanced, integrated approach.
From there, I expanded beyond the traditional medical model to study bodywork and massage, herbal medicine, energy-work and integrative healing modalities. I have completed trainings in Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy, Holistic Pelvic Care, Craniosacral therapy and Hakomi and am currently undertaking a comprehensive multi-year Herbal Medicine for Women Course with Dr. Aviva Romm.
Along the way, my personal experiences have served as a guide. The healing journeys of my five pregnancies, the birth of each of my children and the postpartum adjustments left me unsatisfied with the solutions I had learned during my training as an allopathic physician. I visited several trusted colleagues, all of whom could only suggest surgery or medicine for the symptoms I was experiencing. I knew that there was another way. I trusted in my body’s ability to heal itself and return to a healthy balance. Using the integrative healing techniques of Holistic Pelvic Care and Maya Abdominal Therapy, I strengthened my own body and took charge of my own health. I am now confident that the answer is not more medicine or surgery but rather learning to listen to our bodies and heal ourselves. Combining this knowledge with my background as a medical doctor allows me to help the women who come to my practice in a deeply fulfilling way.
My greatest strength and wisdom has come from the lessons I have learned from mothering my five children. I have been genuinely blessed by the lineage of wise women that have come before me and helped shape my approach to holistic healing: Linda Arnold, Rosita Arvigo, Rosemary Gladstar, Tami Kent, Jeannine Parvati, Lissa Rankin, Aviva Romm and Penny Sisto. I am thankful for the opportunities to serve the women in my community on their journey to wellness. My path has now come Full Circle.
