Women's Healing Arts:
Supporting Mothers in the Childbearing Year

A course for women's healthcare practioners, doulas, midwives, or ANY women interested in healing arts

Course: 35 Hours
When: Oct. 11th - Nov 22nd, (Sundays) 10am-3pm
Certificate: Healing Arts for the Childbearing Year
Fee: $400-475 for series, sliding scale. $80 for individual classes
Location: Awakenings Wellness Center, 1016 SE 12th Avenue Portland, OR 97214

Class Description: Learn the basics of healing modalities such as pregnancy massage, prenatal yoga, cranial sacral therapy and pelvic floor healthcare. Develop trust and build community through discussions on communication, ritual and holding sacred space for birth and beyond. Deepen your connection through activities of creating intentional art, song, drumming, and more!

You Will:

  • Discuss women's nutrition for the childbearing year
  • Prepare herbal medicines and for women's body care
  • Practice prenatal and postpartum yoga
  • Learn about healing modalities of pregnancy massage
  • Develop trust and build community through discussions on communication, ritual, and holding sacred space for birth and beyond
  • Deepen our connection to our source of creativity through activities of intentional arts, song & drumming

Guest Speakers:

  • Therese Yakshi Charvet, founding member and president of the Midwives Alliance of North America and former Midwifery Program Director at Seattle Midwifery School, will teach about holding sacred space in the birth place.
  • Sobonfu Some, a Keeper of Rituals from her tribe in West Africa, founder of Ancestors Wisdom Spring, and author of Welcoming Spirit Home, will teach about blessingways and ritual
  • Michelle Gerbi, chiropractor & childbirth education and hypnobirth instructor, her bodywork focus is on women's pelvic floor health and how this effects a a woman's ability to birth her baby as well as postpartum healing.
  • Carol Gray, Cranial Sacral Therapist, Birthing From Within Instructor, and Midwife will teach healing touch techniques based on cranial sacral therapy for mommas and babies
  • Mara Freidman, Professional Artist of New Moon Visions, known for her beautiful and powerful portrayal of the feminine spirit, will lead us in creating sacred art
  • Shanti Shivani, will bring us the Yoga of Sound combined with techniques of movement and opening for birth which she learned and taught alongside internationally known Frederick Leboyer (Birth Without Violence)
  • Eneyda Spradlin Ramos, Homebirth Assistant, Massage Therapist, and speaker at International Midwifery Today Conferences will teach pregnancy and postpartum massage techniques
  • Tina Lilly, co-creator of The Yoga Way to Birth course and facilitator of Birth Rehearsal workshops, Yoga Instructor and Certified Doula, will teach pregnancy and postpartum yoga, breath work, and meditation techniques for birth
  • LaShelle Charde, counselor and Compassionate Non-Violent Communication (NVC) certified trainer, teaches techniques to connect with yourself, so you can effectively connect and communicate with others
  • Hope Medford, Midwife (CPM), artist, drummer, bodyworker, community education organizer and founder of Artemis Institute, will lead us in drumming and song, and will facilitate this series

Women's Drum Class

When: September 5-26, (Saturdays) 4-6pm
Where: 2021 SE 34th Ave. Portland OR 97214
Fee: $75 for series or $20 drop in for each class

All levels Welcome!!! Instruments provided

Class Description:
Rhythm is a powerful source of creative inspiration. Playing the drum with positive, healing intentions unites people in community and connects us with our world.

Over a course of 6 weeks, We will explore sounds and patterns on African hand drums in a welcoming, friendly environment. We will use our instruments to practice expressing our 'voices' and ourselves through this ancient and powerful tool. We will learn the basics of hand drumming and even learn a few traditional rhythms. All levels are encouraged, drums will be provided (or bring your own if you want).

Instructor: Hope Medford
Hope Medford has been playing hand drums for 15 years, and has co-facilitated drum circle classes for over 2 thousand children and adults. She has had the honor of studying with such teachers as: Babtunde Olatunje, of Nigeria, Thione Diop, in Senegal, and Antionio Balaskas in Peru. She loves sharing this powerful experience with women!

Plant Medicine for Women

When: Saturdays, 10am-3pm Sept. 19th - Oct. 10th

Class Description: In this 20 hour course, we will take herb walks, identifying and harvesting fall plants. We will even make a root tonic brew that we'll press and you can take home with you.

Women's Healing Arts Series
for the Childbearing Year

11 Week Series: Sundays 1- 5 pm  Sept 7 - Nov 23, 2008
( Sept 7 - this day only 3-7 pm, no class Oct 12 )
Location: Common Grounds Wellness Center, Trillium Room, 2926 NE Flanders, Portland OR 97214

Class Description:Awaken and deepen your knowledge of women's wisdom. This 11 week series is a class in holistic approaches to supporting new mothers and families in the childbearing year. This class is for doulas, mothers, childbirth educators, women's healthcare practitioners, and any woman interested in developing her understanding of healing arts.

You will:

  • Discuss women's nutrition for the childbearing year

  • Practice prenatal and postpartum yoga and healing Qi (Chi) Gong
  • Explore our relationship to power and connection to the natural cycles of the Earth
  • Learn about healing modalities of pregnancy and infant massage and cranial sacral therapy
  • Develop trust and build community through discussions on communication, ritual, and holding sacred space for birth and beyond
  • Deepen our connection to our source of creativity through activities of intentional arts, song &
    drumming

  • Patricia Davis, Choctaw Medicine Woman with a masters degree in peacemaking leadership will teach about using Sacred Circle Ceremony for healing body, mind and spirit

  • Suzanne Shaw, Nutritionist and co-director of the Asian Healing Arts and Integrative Nutrition program at Heartwood Institute, will discuss nutrition for women

  • Jesse Henderson, co-founder of Mother Tree Birth Services, certified doula trainer (DONA) and mentor, MamActivist, and certified Lamaze instructor will facilitate a discussion on birth support

  • Hope Medford, Midwife (CPM), artist, drummer, bodyworker and community education organizer, will lead us in drumming and song, and will facilitate the series

  • Kelley Burke, Massage Therapist (LMT) and Certified Doula will teach about pregnancy and infant massage, with hands on demonstrations

  • Muse Lokajickova, Massage Therapist (LMT), will teach self care through self-massage, making herbal body oils and healing Qi (Chi) Gong
